What does Medicare Supplement Plan G cover?

Plan G is a standardized Medigap letter. In California, Plan G from one company is designed to cover the same core benefits as Plan G from another. Premiums are not standardized. This is education — not a recommendation to buy Plan G.

What Plan G is designed to help with

You keep Original Medicare (Parts A and B). Plan G is designed to help with many of the costs Original Medicare leaves behind — including the Part A hospital deductible, Part B coinsurance, skilled nursing coinsurance, blood, and Part B excess charges if a provider does not accept assignment. Confirm the current outline of coverage. Benefits can be described only in general terms here.

What it generally does not include

Plan G generally does not pay the annual Part B deductible (you pay that). It does not include Part D prescriptions, and it generally does not add routine dental, vision, or hearing extras. You usually add a separate Part D plan if you need outpatient drugs.

Plan F is a different letter

Plan F is generally not available to people newly eligible for Medicare after January 1, 2020. People who already have Plan F may keep it. Plan G is the letter many newly eligible people compare instead. That is a structure note, not a pick.

Premiums are not the benefit

Companies price the same letter differently. Household discounts and rate history vary. Ask for the outline of coverage and confirm rules with the California Department of Insurance and Medicare.gov. This website does not enroll you.

Common questions

Is Plan G the same at every company?
Core standardized benefits are designed to match by letter. Premiums, discounts, and customer service are not standardized. This site does not name a best company.
Does Plan G include prescriptions?
Generally no. Medigap works with Original Medicare. Outpatient drugs are usually a separate Part D plan.
