Start with the window you are in
New to Medicare: Initial Enrollment is a 7-month window around your 65th birthday. Already on Medicare: Annual Enrollment is October 15–December 7 for many Advantage and Part D changes. Mixing those windows is a common source of stress. Confirm dates on Medicare.gov.
County is not the same as ZIP
Los Angeles County includes Los Angeles, Long Beach, Pasadena, the San Gabriel Valley, and many other communities. Medicare Advantage and Part D products are tied to ZIP code. Use Medicare.gov for the complete list in your ZIP, or call 1-800-MEDICARE (TTY 711) or California HICAP at 1-800-434-0222.
Two structures, not two flavors of the same plan
Medicare Advantage is a private plan that delivers Medicare benefits, usually with a network. A Medicare Supplement works with Original Medicare and typically allows any provider that accepts Medicare. Prescriptions are often inside Advantage; with a Supplement you generally add Part D. Neither is automatically better.
If costs are the worry
Extra Help and Medi-Cal may lower what some people pay. Eligibility is official — Social Security and California’s Medi-Cal programs — not this website.
