Deductible

« Back to Glossary IndexAn insurance deductible is the amount of money that you have to pay for certain types of claims before your insurance company will cover the rest.  Different types of insurance have different ways of applying them. Some are per claim, meaning you have to pay them each time you file a claim. Some are per year, meaning you only have to pay them once in a calendar year. Some deductibles are fixed amounts, while some are percentages of the total claim amount. The size affects the cost of your insurance premium. Generally, the higher your deductible, the lower your premium, and vice versa. This is because you are taking on more or less risk by choosing a higher or lower deductible. You should choose a deductible that you can afford to pay in case of a claim, but also that suits your budget and needs.« Back to Glossary Index
