Special Enrollment Periods (SEP)

Certain life events can create enrollment opportunities outside the standard Medicare windows.

What an SEP is

A Special Enrollment Period is an enrollment opportunity triggered by a qualifying event. The rules and deadlines depend on the event.

Common situations

Examples can include losing employer coverage, moving out of a plan’s service area, changes in Medicaid or Extra Help, and other qualifying events defined by CMS.

Timing is important

Document the event and verify the applicable deadline before taking action. Do not assume you have an SEP without checking the rule that applies to you.
