The 7-month window
Initial Enrollment typically starts three months before the month you turn 65, includes your birthday month, and continues three months after. Signing up earlier in the window can help coverage start when you want it to. Waiting until after the window can create gaps or late-enrollment penalties unless an exception applies. Confirm dates on Medicare.gov.
If you still have employer coverage
If you or a spouse is still working and the employer has 20 or more employees, you may be able to delay Part B without a late penalty. Get that in writing from the benefits office before you assume. HSA contributions generally must stop once you enroll in Medicare. Social Security and Medicare.gov are the official sources for your situation.
A, B, then the rest
Parts A and B are Original Medicare. After that, people usually look at how to handle remaining medical costs and prescriptions: Medicare Advantage, or Original Medicare plus a Supplement plus Part D. Neither path is automatically better. Doctors, drugs, travel, and your ZIP code all matter. We explain the structure. You decide.
IEP is not AEP
Initial Enrollment is for people new to Medicare. Annual Enrollment (October 15–December 7) is a later window for people who already have Medicare and may change certain coverage. Mixing the two is a common source of stress. If a child or caregiver is helping, they can listen in on Zoom.
